‘I'm Just Here For The Drinks’ by Sother Teague

This collection of cocktail essays and insights, as well as 100+ recipes, is written by the one and only Sother Teague. His bar Amor y Amargo in NYC's East Village is known as a bitters tasting room and was where I first started exploring the incredible world of aperitifs and amaros. To open the pages of this book is to access a brain in the daily study of history, anthropology, science and sociology surrounding spirits and cocktails.

‘Spirits of Latin America’ by Ivy Mix

While living in the Carrol Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn, Ivy Mix’s Leyenda became one of my regular spots. And for good reason - it’s one of the best cocktail bars in the city with a focus on some of my favorite spirits…Tequila, Mezcal and Rum. And though I’m no longer in New York, her book ‘Spirits of Latin America’ maintains a prominent spot on my home bar. The book is separated out into three distinct sections detailing the history and culture of agave, sugarcane, and grape distillates along with over 100 recipes from Leyenda and beyond. Grab yourself a copy, mix up her modern classic the Tia Mia, and learn a bit more about these amazing spirits. You’ll be happy you did. Cheers.

‘A Proper Drink’ by Robert Simonson

The full title is “A Proper Drink: The Untold Story of How a Band of Bartenders Saved the Civilized Drinking World”, and it sounds hyperbolic but it’s true! Ever wonder how classic cocktails invented in the 1920s are still on menus today? This book explains it all, and posits that without the persistence of a handful of bartenders we’d all be drinking plain vodka tonics today. A must read for cocktail enthusiasts.

‘Death & Co.: Modern Classic Cocktails,’ by Nick Fauchald & David Kaplan

‘Death & Co.: Modern Classic Cocktails,’ by Nick Fauchald & David Kaplan

They approach every cocktail like a dish and connect each recipe to a story. There’s real art and passion behind everything they do. Everything is very timeless in the book.

‘The Mini Bar’ by PUNCH

‘The Mini Bar’ by PUNCH

I bought this little set mostly to be a fun bar accessory, but it comes in handy all the time! The recipes mainly cover the basics but it looks pretty great on a bar and makes a superb hostess gift. There are 100 recipes and each book singles out a specific spirit for a total of 8 volumes. There’s even a few designated pages in each one for writing your own notes and recipes.
